Scoring

Axes must be inside the black line in order to count for that value. The point values go as following. Starting from the bullseye and working outward:

    1. 6 points for the bullseye
    2. 5 points for the 1st ring (defined as the unmarked area between the bullseye and black ring around bullseye area)
    3. 4 points for the 2nd ring
    4. 3 points for the 3rd ring
    5. 2 points for the 4th ring.
    6. 1 point for the 5th ring.
    7. 8 points for the Killshot.
    8. If the axe falls before the presiding official scores the axe, the axe is counted as a drop
Target

The WATL target is built with five 4′ vertical boards. The boards should be cut from 2×10 lumber boards that can be purchased from any lumber supplier.

Typical dimensions for a 2×10 are 1.5″ thickness by 9.25″ width.

Axes

An IATF match uses 2 differnt axes, a “hatchet” and a “big axe”.

Hatchet

Blade: The blade of the axe must be no longer than 4″ and no shorter than 3”

Handle: The axe handle must be made of wood and the length measured from bottom of the handle to the top of the axe head must be between 13″-17″

Weight: 1.5 to 2.5 lbs

Big Axe

Blade: The blade of the axe must be no longer than 4-5/8″ and no shorter than 3.5”

Weight – 2.75 to 3.75lbs (handle included)

Throw Distance

Hatchet

When throwing in an offical NATF match, throwers must stand no closer than 9′-2″ “red line”.

Throwers start with rear foot behind the “black line” (14′-2″) and lead foot can be be one, infront or beside the black line.

Thrower will then lift rear foot, take step, and throw axe without lifting the now fron, previously rear, foot.

Scoring

For a regulation IATF the scoring is as follows:

  1. The bullseye or black ring is worth 5 pts;
  2. The middle or red ring is worth 3 pts;
  3. The outer or blue ring is worth 1 pt;
  4. The green dot in each upper corner of the target, or Clutch™ is worth 7 pts.
Target

The center of the bullseye sits in the center of the middle 2×10:

    1. Bullseye is 7″ in diameter;
    2. Red (3 point ring) is 17″ inches in diameter;
    3. Blue (1 point ring) is 27″ inches in diameter .
  1. The centre of the bullseye measures 63″ from the floor;
  2. Left or right side boards may be mounted at varying heights on the backboard to keep knots away from point areas:
    1. Sideboards are always mounted blank so their height position doesn’t affect the location of the Clutch or point areas.
